about
A signature Patrick Morris (ex: Don Caballero) bass intro escalates into a math rock frenzy by this veteran Chicago trio that uses some of their most intricate musical trickery to fuse together a frenetic sound reminiscent of June of 44, King Crimson, Protomartyr, and Girls Against Boys. Vocalist Justin Sinkovich (ex: Thumbnail, Atombombpocknife) walks us through a true story of how he got scammed in Mexico; an episode which started by shooting tequila in a jewelry story, and ended by Justin turning tables on his antagonists by having their entire business’s bank account shut down.
lyrics
With three shots of Tequila in a jewelry store or maybe was it four
I can’t remember anymore I don’t even know what we went in there for
A cheap date the conversion rate just don’t carry the zero
The joy amber scam when landing don’t be surprised it’s Ill-advised for them
And they’re on the lam they’re watching the docks like hawks for a new cohort that doesn’t know their plan
Was just trying to get to the OXXO but little did we know the cards were stacked the plan intact
We’re running just a little too late with that conversion rate with no translator and no calculator
Real sharks keep moving so fuck your island vibes
Cause hope’s still alive we know what you prescribed I’ve called the bank your ship it sank
Now I write the script the con is flipped the new amount we closed your whole store’s account
Now that I’m keeping my head now I’ve learned to stay calm
Reconnect to the real fate sense of kismet
Laugh about your feeble attempts
Heading back to much milder temps

A fantastic album. I can see why they didn't continue under the name The Evens, as it's a different sound with the bass added. Coriky is the Evens + Joe Lally from Fugazi on bass. If you can imagine The Evens with a slightly more funky, aggressive sound like Fugazi... that's what you get! And there's no way that can ever go wrong. What a great debut album!! smiledozer
